Green card: when you need it and what it costs
GoAhead.live · 2026-08-20 · 1 min čitanja
A short guide to when the green card is mandatory and what to check before you leave.
The green card is international proof that your vehicle carries third-party motor insurance abroad. Border police on the Balkan crossings ask for it regularly.
When you need it
For Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania and Turkey a green card is mandatory for vehicles registered in North Macedonia. For EU countries, including Greece and Bulgaria, the plate is usually enough.
Check before you leave
- The dates cover your whole trip.
- The plate number on the card is correct.
- The country you are driving to is not crossed out.
What it costs
Price depends on duration and vehicle type. A 15 day policy is cheapest for short trips; a monthly one usually pays off in summer.
