Breaking down — what to do first
- Get off the carriageway if the car still rolls, and put all four indicators on.
- Put the reflective vest on before you step out — in Serbia, Croatia and Hungary this is a legal requirement and is fined.
- Place the warning triangle 50 m back on a local road, 100 m on a motorway.
- Move passengers behind the barrier, not back into the car.
- Call your insurer first — many policies include towing, and calling a truck yourself can void the claim.
- Note the kilometre marker and direction of travel; it is the first thing you will be asked.
If you break down in the border queue
Do not abandon the vehicle. Call 112 and describe exactly where you are — the border police will open the side lane for a recovery truck. A tow truck cannot enter the crossing zone without their clearance.
A green card does not cover towing. That is separate cover — check the policy before you leave.
